new job!

I sort of forgot about this blog I started, hence the long time since I last posted. I got a new job! I start tomorrow as a lab tech. I’m really excited.

Our house is more or less set up, although there’s still some painting to do. We have a bunch of outdoors stuff to get done. We have a functional fireplace now, which is really cool.

Around when we first moved in, we made the mistake of getting a quote on waterproofing our basement, but decided not to get it done, because it’s really expensive. Since then, they keep calling me and trying to schedule someone to come out and look at my basement again, even though I keep telling them we aren’t interested. They are super pushy about it, too, so I have to hang up on them.

It’s like:

Them: bla bla bla We have a sale on stuff. Our guy can come out next week to do things and so would Monday or Tuesday work better for you?

Me: I’m not interested.

Them: Well, we have a great sale, so is Monday or Tuesday better for you, or if you’d rather, we can do Wednesday?

Me: I’m not interested.

Them: *still talking while I’m trying to say I’m not interested.*

Me: *click*

We are doing a lot of outside stuff for the house. We’ve got a garden, and we’re planning a patio. We also took apart the rock wall in the front yard, because it was horrible, and now we’re replacing it with a cinderblock planter wall. It doesn’t stick out as far, so we can actually open the car door there, and it’ll be more even. Plus, I think the plants in the cinderblocks will look nice.

stuff

Today is more unpacking. I don’t know exactly what I did, but my pinky knuckle has been hurting since we moved, so I took off my wedding and engagement rings so I could buddy tape my pinky finger to my ring finger. This is the first time I’ve taken them off since I first put my wedding ring on behind the engagement ring. (I was wearing it wrong for a while.) My engagement ring is too small for me, so I think I’m going to have to get it resized.

Meantime, there’s still loads of unpacking to do, and most of it falls on me, since my husband works and I don’t right now. It’s daunting but we’ll get there.

I have recently made the switch from coffee to tea because I panicked and thought I might have arthritis, and saw that tea was better for inflammation than coffee. I am not so panicked about arthritis anymore, but i am still sticking with it, and generally enjoying the tea. plus it removes some calories from my diet, because i put milk or cream in my coffee, but not in my tea.

the cats are all very lovy right now, but also very needy. they constantly follow me around, demanding pets, laps, and treats. even curly, who never cared about treats before, is crazy about them lately. It makes it hard to get anything done when I’ve got three little furry children demanding love.

what to do about Jehovah’s Witnesses?

So I was just visited by Jehovah’s witness ladies, who read the bible at me and tried to get me to take their magazine. They were very nice, and so I can’t complain too much, but I find them a little irritating, because it’s hard to get rid of them without being rude, and I don’t want to be rude because they are nice. I’m not very good with talking to people, especially people I don’t know. In the past, when I’ve interacted with Jehovah Witnesses, I’ve taken the magazines to get them to leave me alone, and they don’t stop there. If you give them any ground, they will push to get you to do more. Several years ago, some lady bothered me at a bus stop while I was reading a book, and then tried to get me to let them come to my apartment to have a bible study. Like she really expected me to allow a bunch of strangers over to my tiny studio apartment to read the bible at me, because I let her give me the magazine. I guess today was better, because I got away without the magazine, after some babbling about the Our Father and them reading one bible passage at me. Blarg

Medusa in love

First off, I’m really hating “Medusa in love” as a title. I really have to think up something better.

Less than a month until nanowrimo starts, and I’m really anxious to get started on it. I really want to try and plan out the story before I start writing it in November. I’m still in the fluffy all the ideas stage, so these posts are going to be a bit erratic, and the story won’t really seem cohesive to anyone reading these.

I was just thinking that maybe she’s a teacher at a school for monster children. Like, think prof. X’s school, but for monsters instead of mutants. And not having a super hero team come out of it. So I guess nothing like that at all. But like, a school where they teach different monster students, and tailor the education to their needs and abilities.

So this school teaches mermaids, medusas, satyrs, centaurs, minotaurs, etc. She’s a teacher there, as well as a former student. She’s a committed scholar, who studies cultures, both human and monster cultures. For the purposes of these posts, “monsters” are any sentient races that aren’t human.

I’m still trying to think out a story line. I’ve got some vague ideas, but it’s not fleshed out enough to put out there yet.

A few random house things

So first of all, I fixed the broken desk. It broke when the movers tried to move it. It was my fault though, because I left the drawers full of stuff. Anyway, it was an easy fix, because it just came apart at a seam, so I just had to get the pieces back together, put some glue, and a couple of nails, and we were good to go.

Next, we got the hubbin’s desk and chair put together last night.

The house is still a mess of boxes and and whatnot. My hands have been aching since the move. I think I overdid it. Not sure if my knuckles are sprained, or if it’s arthritis, or what. Trying to take it easy today, and turned the heat on, which seems to help a bit.

I think I’ve been watching too much HGTV lately, so I’m thinking about all these cool renovation things we could do to make the house nicer. I’ve been thinking about putting in a tile countertop. Hubbin didn’t like the idea, but I think putting in large tiles could look really nice. I’m going to show him some pictures and see if I can bring him around. I’m hoping he’s picturing the old small tile with all the grout issues and whatnot, and if I show him how nice it could be, he’ll be on board with the idea. Anyway, this is a far-off project. we’ve got a lot more pressing things to deal with first.

I really want to get a garbage disposal. We’ve only cooked two meals here, and I already miss having one. Hopefully we can get that in the next few weeks.

In general, I’m feeling overwhelmed by the amount of stuff we need to get done, but we’ll get there.

car is broken

Today I noticed a small puddle under the car, and it looked kinda dark brown so i thought it was an oil leak. I looked up oil leak online and it didn’t seem like a big deal, but also not something you’d want to leave for long, so i took it to a repair place. Turns out that it’s a gas tank leak, which is more expensive, and much more serious. Now we have to decide whether we want to spend about 1.5-2k on repairs, or junk the car and get a new one. I’m kinda freaking out and my husband’s not answering the phone. Cats are worried about me but don’t know what’s wrong, and can’t really help with this.

Medusa In Love-more fleshed out

So I’m leaning more toward making the love story a secondary plot, rather than the main storyline. So I had this idea come to me that you know how there’s all these stories about a young adult, usually a boy, that’s the Chosen One, and has to save the world? So what I’m thinking that maybe something like that happens to one of Medusa’s students, but she goes out and faces the evil thing and saves the world, to protect this 11 year old kid from some horrible destiny thing.

I think that could be pretty fun. So like she’s this awesome teacher lady, with the whole medusa thing going on, which sucks, and makes her life difficult. She steps up and saves the world, not to be the Hero of everything, but to protect this little kid, and along the way, she finds love with someone who she can actually be with, because their disability protects them from her curse. Something along those lines. Anyway, that’s just a rough sketch, but it’s the first time I’ve had a story sorted in my head with a beginning, middle, and end.

I’m going to keep trying to tease out the story over the next month and a half, and maybe use this idea as my nanowrimo this year. So no actually writing this until November, but I can plan out the story and outline until then. I’m almost certainly not going to call my novel Medusa In Love, because I think that’s a terrible name for a story, but I haven’t thought of anything better, so I’ll probably keep using that for now.

house stuff

We (me and my husband) recently bought a house. We ripped a smelly gross old carpet out of the dining room, to find mostly nice old wood floors that we think are the original ones, which is really cool. Our house was built in 1887. The problem is that a previous owner drove several screws into it for some reason. Last night, we tried to drive them in a little more, and cover them with wood putty. I sanded the putty down today and used some Old English polish/scratch cover/stain stuff to try and get it to match. Some of them look fine now, but others didn’t go down far enough, so the would putty is an obvious little bit sticking up, and it looks like there’s some gunk stuck to the floor.

I’m frustrated about this because I really want these floors to look nice. Maybe I should take the screws out and then fill the holes with wood putty, but I’m worried that the screws were there for a reason, so I’m hesitant to pull them out. I don’t want to spend too much more time on this right now, because there’s a lot of stuff I need to get done today so we can start moving in this weekend.

On the plus side, we got our appliances yesterday, and the fridge and stove are set up. Still have to set up the dishwasher, but I’m really excited to have appliances. Well, back to work.

Medusa in Love

So I’ve been musing a little more about this story idea, and I was thinking that I could have Medusa-girl working as a teacher at a school for the blind, since she doesn’t have to worry about turning them into stone. Maybe she wears dark sunglasses to shield others from her gaze, and a hijab to hide the snakes. Not sure if she’s actually Muslim, or if she just uses the hijab as a disguise, to pass for normal. Maybe instead of my first idea of her falling in love with a blind person, she could be in love with an autistic person, who doesn’t make eye contact. Of course, she could just be in love with someone without any disabilities, who makes a point to avoid her gaze on purpose for their own safety, but I like the idea of a disability being an integral part of the relationship, and something that actually has an advantage in this case.

I don’t know if anyone reads this, but if anyone out there does, maybe let me know if you would be interested in reading a love story about a Gorgon and an autistic person. Also, if anyone out there has an opinion on the subject, do you think she should be Muslim, or just wear the hijab to hide the snakes? I worry that making her just using the hijab as a disguise could be problematic, but I’m not Muslim, so I also worry about writing her as a Muslim, and not screwing that up.

Also, I’m still trying to think up a plot. Should this be purely a love story? Should there be some other major plot going on, with the love story going on in the background, as a subplot? If so, what should the plot be? Obviously there’s a fantasy element at play, since the main character is a Gorgon, but what other fantasy stuff is there? When is this story set? Modern times or some historical period? Is this set in the real world?

Story Ideas

Okay, so I have a lot of story ideas. I never really know where to go with them, so they just float around in my head for a bit, until I get distracted and forget about them. This is  of the things I’m going to put on this blog. I’ll write my ideas down here, and that way, I can go back to them if I come up with something to do with it. Anyone who reads this can feel free to use my ideas as a writing prompt, if they like.

So the idea I thought up today is having a Gorgon Medusa-like girl fall in love with someone that’s blind. Since they can’t see her, they won’t get turned into stone. I’m not sure what to do with it, beyond that little idea there, but it sounded like a fun idea.
